Primary Sources: The 1970s: Home & Family

Hardly the last or least of the Up episodes, this is nevertheless the final one to include all fourteen of the series' original subjects. Charles, ending his participation, has assumed a long-haired look standard for youthful whites of the 1970s, while Symon, impressive in his afro and mustache, idolizes Muhammad Ali. Jackie and Lynn are both married. Sue is single and employed at a travel agency, but a more stark contrast to working-class matrimony comes from Suzy, now an unconcealed enemy of marriage after her parents' divorce. Nick is studying nuclear physics at Oxford. John, for his part, has settled into a comfortable, affable conservatism, which his two upper-class cohorts echo or deflect from scene to scene. Unfortunately for Tony, his ambition to become a jockey did not pan out, and now he prepares for an equally mobile but far less stately occupation-driving a London cab-with typical charm and optimism.

"This film describes a 1970 recreational support program launched by the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation of the U.S. Department of the Interior, in conjunction with the President's Council on Youth Opportunity and the Department of Labor's Manpower Administration. The program's goals were to expand existing recreational programs for inner city children; increase the number of recreational opportunities available for underpriviledged inner city children; and to provide services, including personnel, transportation, hot lunches, and recreational supplies for programs in over 100 cities nationwide. "

Between January 1978 and April 1979, Nooney networked her way through Brooklyn documenting residences and their occupants, asking each for a referral to another willing subject. The Dinanda Nooney Brooklyn photographs collection depicts over 150 families or individuals and is organized chronologically. Each photograph is identified by neighborhood, address, and the names of the sitters. Among those neighborhoods depicted are Bay Ridge, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Heights, Bushwick, Carroll Gardens, Coney Island, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Fort Greene, Gravesend, Greenpoint, and Park Slope. In addition to the photographs, Nooney kept index cards to which she affixed contact prints and took notes recording her observations of each family. The collection includes copies of these notes.
