Citizenship Clause:

  • All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

Privileges or Immunities Clause:

  • No State shall make or enforce any law to abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.

Due Process Clause:

  • Prevent the denial of "life, liberty, or property" by the federal and state governments, without due process of law.

Equal Protection Clause:

  • Requires each state to provide equal protection under the law to all people.

Apportionment of Representatives:

  • Penalized states if they denied the right to vote to male citizens over 21 years of age by reducing the state's representation in the House.

Disqualification from Office for Insurrection or Rebellion:

  • Office holders can not have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or given aid or comfort to the enemies of the United States.

Validity of Public Debt:

  • Confirmed the legitimacy of public debt appropriated by Congress, but also confirmed that neither the U.S. or any state would pay for the loss of slaves or debts that were incurred by the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War.

Enforcement Clause:

  • Gave Congress  the power to pass laws in order to enforce the provisions of the amendment.
