Info

Interlibrary Loan is a free service for the Christopher Newport Community.  It can be an invaluable resource and it expands what resources you have access to.

ILLiad is the automated Interlibrary Loan system that handles all incoming and outgoing requests.  Articles requested are delivered electronically via a link in an email that ILLiad generates once the file comes to us and is processed.  These can take up to a week.  Books typically take one to two weeks and sometimes longer for special material.  Dissertations/theses are normally owned by one or two libraries and we may not be able to obtain them.

*Interlibrary Loan is open to all Faculty, Staff, Graduate Students, Undergraduate Students and Life Long Learners.

*There are weekly limits:

10 requests for Undergraduate Students and Life Long Learners per week

20 requests for Faculty, Graduate Students and Staff per week

Anything that is still outstanding from a previous week does not count against the requests for the subsequent weeks.  If you are in a research intensive class, please email ILL to see if we can accommodate you in some way.

*We only accept ILL requests through ILLiad and when the proper form in ILLiad is filled out.  Anything that is emailed to us will be deleted.  ILLiad allows us to keep track of requests, reduce error and get items out faster to you.  Filling out the proper form in ILLiad is important, but there will be times when you will need to use the "Other (Free Text)" form.  This is not appropriate for any article or book.  It is appropriate if you are unsure of the media type or you genuinely need assistance with formatting.  We do our best to find exactly what you are looking for and the more information you provide, the better we can get you what you want.

*Although there are no fines for ILL, repeated abuse in the form of overdues will not be tolerated and will result in being suspended from using ILL for a semester or longer.  We take overdues very seriously since it can impact other users and result in other libraries blocking our borrowing privileges.  We reserve the right to revoke ILL privileges at any time for the abuse of the service.

*We do not engage in document delivery at this time.  Document delivery is when we own an item (book, journal, etc) and we copy or send the item to you, wherever you are.  If we own an item and it is available for you to come in and pick up, we will cancel your request.

*If a book or periodical is available at CNU and you cannot locate the item, please inquire at the Circulation Desk.  Feel free to request the item once a library staff member has deemed it lost and indicate that in your request in the Notes section of the ILLiad form.

*We are able to get other items such as, DVDs, audio books, microfilm/fiche, etc.  Reference books and textbooks are nearly impossible to get.  We are unable to get any rare or international material.  New books and bestsellers are also difficult to obtain.  It can take up to six months after a title is published for a circulating copy to be found through ILL.

*If you feel you are not receiving email from us, please check the email address you gave us in your account settings.  We may also be experiencing email issues, so please let us know!

Delivery:  As items come in, we process them and get them out to you in several ways.  All physical loans (books, DVDs, etc) must be picked up at the circulation desk and returned to the circulation desk.  We will not ship books to your campus or home address.  Once you pick a loan up, the item is in your care and is your responsibility.  Articles will come mostly in electronic form, but for articles we cannot scan in, you can pick them up at the circulation desk.

RSS Feature!  Did you know that you can get updates from your account via RSS? Once you log in to your ILLiad account, there is a link to the feed in the upper right corner.  This will notify you of any status changes with items you have requested.

WorldCat

You can place a request for items directly through WorldCat.  After searching for  and locating an item, click on the item record and you will see a link that says, “Send Request to ILLiad”.  If you click on this link, it will open a new tab or window in your browser, asking for your login and password for ILLiad.  Once you log in, it will populate the form for you.

Please check item holdings in WorldCat by clicking on the “libraries” button in the top left of the WorldCat Item form.  This will show who has the item you are looking for.

Consortium Card

If you do not have time to wait for an interlibrary loan, please inquire at the Circulation Desk to get a Tidewater Consortium Card that you can use at area libraries.  The card is free and lasts for one semester.

 CONTU Guidelines
For each title of a journal for the last five years (2006-2011), we must abide by specific guidelines.  We can only request five articles from that date range per title, per calendar year.  If we request over five articles, we must pay Copyright fees.  Any article older than six years or more does not fall under these guidelines.
