The Art of Fiction XXXIX: Jorge Luis Borges- This link opens in a new window
"Presents an interview with Argentine author Jorge Luis Borges. Asked about his reluctance to begin writing stories, he replies that he had always thought of himself as a poet; but, after recovering from a serious head injury, he was worried he might not be able to write poetry any longer. It was then that he tried writing a short story instead and it proved successful. He discusses many authors he admires, including Mark Twain, H. Bustos Domecq and Joseph Conrad. Borges notes that he believes a smooth and simple literary style is the mark of artistic maturity and that he generally uses strange symbolism in his tales in order to conceal the autobiographical elements they contain."
