Behind the Scenes in Candy FactoriesLibrary of Congress
"This study by the Consumers' League of New York aims to educate the public about the conditions under which candy is made. It examines twenty-five candy factories in New York City, ranging from those making the cheapest lollipops to large factories whose products are nationally advertised. Although it discusses workers' hours and earnings, the report is most concerned with factory sanitation, the ethnic makeup of the labor force, female workers' living and working conditions, and the effect of candy products on the public. The book concludes with a set of recommendations for improving the conditions of candy manufacture. Photographs of the candy factories accompany the text. "
