Bonn's Use Factor

  • Developed in 1974 by G. S. Bonn.
  • Calculation: call number % of total circulation/call number % of total holdings
  • Ideal result in terms of collection usage is 1.
  • Results above 1 indicate that a collection is overused; results less than 1 indicate that a collection is underused.

Mill's Percentage of Expected Use

  • Developed in 1982 by T. R. Mills
  • Used Bonn's Use Factor to predict a collection's percentage of expected use.
  • Calculation: Bonn's Use Factor  * 100 = % of expected use.
  • Percentages over 100% indicates an overused collection; less than 100%, an underused collection.
