How to see Journal Finder in PubMed

Note: For PubMed to display the Trible Library's Journal Finder icon, you must do one of the following:

  • Use the PubMed link on the Trible Library website, found under "Databases A to Z". (Go ahead and bookmark it.)
  • OR
  • Create a PubMed My NCBI account and set Christopher Newport University as the preference in Pubmed's Outside Tool option.

When using either of these options, the Journal Finder icon appears at the citation level on the PubMed results. Click on the icon to search the library's Electronic and Print Journal Holdings for the article.  If we do not have access to a journal, you can request the article via Interlibrary Loan.

The Journal Finder icon appears at the citation level of results.  Just click on an article title and look in the upper right corner, as pictured below.

Setting up a My NCBI Account with the Outside Tool

My NCBI is a service offered by PubMed where users can create accounts to save searches and results, be alerted with new results for saved searches as well as directly link to the Trible Library's Journal Finder to see what journals we have access to. In order to actually access electronic journals off campus, you will need to follow the off campus access instructions.

To set up a My NCBI Account:

  1. Click Sign in to NCBI at the top of the page (links are highlighted in image)
an image of where the Sign In links are located in PubMed
  2. Create a User Name and a Password.
  3. An email address is optional, but note that only one email address may be associated with that account.

After setting up a My NCBI Account, you need to add Christopher Newport University to your Outside Tool preference.

To add an Outside Tool preference:

  1. Sign in to My NCBI.
  2. Click the My NCBI link located on the top right side of the page.
  3. On your My NCBI page, click on the NCBI Site Preferences link located on the top right side of the page.site preferences link
  4. On the My NCBI Preferences page, under PubMed Preferences, choose Outside Tool.
  5. Scroll down the page to find and select Christopher Newport University from the list and click Save.
  6. Your outside tool preference is in effect only when you are signed in to My NCBI.

Once this preference has been added, whenever you sign into your My NCBI account, you will see the Journal Finder at the citation level.

PubMed manages all the My NCBI accounts. If you need to reset your password or want more information on using the My NCBI account, see PubMed Help: My NCBI.
