Checking Out Materials

Library materials may be borrowed from the Trible Library by bringing the items to the Circulation Desk during normal library hours along with your CNU ID or Community Patron library card.

If you need assistance finding items, please ask at the Circulation Desk.

Information on what may be borrowed, for how long, and how much overdue fines are can be found by picking the proper user group tab above.

Requesting Material

If the item you want is checked out, you can place a hold on the item so you can get it when it's returned.

This can be done online by finding the item in the online catalog and using the “Request” button, or by asking at the Circulation Desk. Once the item is returned, you'll get an email letting you know it's ready to pick up at the Circulation desk.

You can't place a hold on items the catalog says are "Available".

Renewing Material

Circulating books may be renewed a maximum of 2 times.  Media collection items may only be renewed 1 time.
Renewals may be requested by email to circ@cnu.edu, by calling (757)594-7133, or by bringing proper ID to the Circulation Desk. Items may also be renewed online from the Library webpage, before their due date.
After the maximum number of renewals, the material must be returned and checked in. If no one is waiting for the material, it may be checked out again.

Reserve items are not renewable.

Returning Material

Library material may be returned at the either the Main Circulation Desk or the East Circulation Desk during normal operating hours. If the Library is closed, material can be placed in the book return that is to the left of the main library entrance (facing the Trible Plaza and David Student Union).

Unpaid Fines or Bills

For CNU Students, any overdue fine amounts totaling $10 or more owed  by a student will be transferred to their CNU Student Account weekly or upon request.  The account can then be paid with a credit card online.

For community patrons (including students no longer attending CNU), a delay in paying fines may result in the submission of their name to the Virginia Department of Taxation. The University is permitted under Virginia Law to attach Virginia State income tax refunds or lottery winnings in repayment of any debt, which is owed to the University.

The circulation desk no longer accepts payments for fines or replacement items.  Kindly contact us and we will make arrangements for you to pay at the business office on the ground floor of CNU Hall.  If you are unable to pay at the business office, payment may be made by mailing a check, made payable to Christopher Newport University, to:

        Trible Library Circulation Department
        Christopher Newport University
        1 Avenue of the Arts
        Newport News, VA 23606

Questions on amounts owed should be directed to the Trible Library Main Circulation Desk at 757-594-7133 or circ@cnu.edu.

Lost Material

If items are lost, damaged beyond repair, or not returned within 60 days after the due date, the patron will be charged for the replacement of the item. Replacement cost is determined based on the item and availability of a replacement.  A $25 non-refundable billing and processing fee is also charged  in addition to the replacement cost as allowed under the Code of Virginia  2.2-4805.
